"MATLAB uses Perl for building mex files. Perl is not a part of the Windows
operating system, so The MathWorks ships a stripped-down version of Perl
with MATLAB. This Perl installation is good enough to build mex files, but
for general purposes it is rather useless. Hence, it is desirable that if a
complete Perl installation is available on the system, the perl interpreter
shipped with the complete installation should be used rather than the one
bundled with MATLAB."

For Matlab Mex help, type "help mex" in the main Matlab window, or browse
the help tree: MATLAB -> using MATLAB -> External Interfaces/API .

Hope this helps :-)
