I assume you want to use INET sockets - see perldoc IO::Socket::INET.

(Otherwise see IO::Socket::UNIX)

You always instantiate the subclass, just like the "perlipc" example does.  The IO::Socket::INET manpage will tell you how.

The IO::Socket (and IO::Handle) pages will only tell you about generic methods, used for all socket types (or IO handles).
