You're right! I just found how to do it:
1. You do need an X-windows display server running on your workstation.
2. Don't set the DISPLAY variable yourself (or via the .login file) - allow
PuTTY to do so.
3. Make sure that X11 forwarding is enabled, and the connection to the
server is via ssh.
