Note also that if you know the value at compile time, you can use 0x
notation and a literal, as you would e.g. in C. This is a bit faster.

     $val = 0x1234;

You can also use octal this way (e.g. 0644), or binary (0b1101).

But there's no built-in way to translate a string "0x1234" to a
numerical value.
